So I’m in the hunt for a new Gore-Tex Pro jacket at a reasonable price. When I say reasonable, for me that’s £250-£350. I‘m a mid range type of person which I appreciate sounds boring.

I’d like a 3 season jacket for hiking really. 3 season means Gore-Tex Pro I think. For season 4 I’ll consider another time.

It has to withstand a downpour (200+ days a year here typically) and have decent breathability. Cliched requirements I know.

It needs to be robust and with a decent map pocket being mega important. Pockets in general need to be above backpack waist belts. Maybe I’m staying the obvious here, but I’ve seen plenty of jackets that don’t have decent map pockets!

The colour isn’t top of the priority list or should it influence my decision? is there something I need to consider here?

I’ve narrowed it down to the following:

  1. Montane Alpine Pro

  2. Mountain Equipment Lhotse

I like the big pockets Montane jackets have. I have a few Montane soft shells and Pertex jackets. Pit zips are great too. I like the price also with the Alpine Pro available for around £280. I don’t want to spend more than £350 at the moment.

I’ve read that the Lhotse is great. Is it? Has it got decent sized map pockets? What makes it so special? The Lhotse comes in a little more expensive than the Montane (unless you are small and like red), but maybe there’s no comparison?

Have I made my search TWO narrow? Are Rab competing in this field? Do they even do Gore—Tex Pro? From what I’ve seen it’s all eVent!

Any Mountain Hardwear stuff I’ve ever owned has fallen apart. Arc’teryx is mega expensive with jackets that are very application specific.

While I could travel to a few outdoor shops and start trying on whatever stock they have, I’d like to be armed with a little more than what I think I know already...

Any advice?

New website. Still in the making with content to be added and launched in the near future. It's very much a hobby project, but hopefully will grow into something useful and interesting for a lot of people to connect with over the coming months. Small steps and all that.

I'm taking my time while trying to learn as I go along. The success of the site will ultimately depend on everyone who can contribute to the blog in particular I feel. I'm a novice walker and keen to gain experience and insight from others. wherever I can find it.

I'll be in touch.
